The Roundup

Article Icon 1Labor Day Weekend Marred With Storms

Late Sunday thunderstorms produced heavy rains and strong winds, causing floods, road closures, and downed power lines throughout central North Carolina and leaving hundreds without power. See storm damage here.

Durham, Granville, and Orange counties were under a flash flood warning for much of Sunday evening following severe storms on Friday that brought heavy rain, abundant lightning, and strong wind gusts.

North Carolina may face more storms soon as the National Hurricane Center is currently tracking three tropical systems heading for the North Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Article Icon 1 Robinson Cuts Into Stein’s Lead

A new poll revealed Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein’s lead over Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson in the North Carolina governor’s race has narrowed to 6 points, down from previous leads of 8-14 points.

The 2024 gubernatorial race is expected to be tight, as Democrats aim to uphold their historical advantage despite recent Republican presidential victories. The outgoing Governor, Democrat Roy Cooper, has served two terms.

The Robinson campaign seems to have responded to recent polling data by launching a tour across North Carolina, focusing on economic and education issues after months of less visible, sometimes controversial appearances.

Article Icon 1UNC Student Makes History in Space

UNC-Chapel Hill senior Karsen Kitchen became the youngest woman to cross the Karman Line, the edge of space, last week as part of the crew on Blue Origin’s eighth human spaceflight mission.

Kitchen, and five other people, were launched from a West Texas spaceport, reaching an altitude of 64.6 miles, slightly above the Karman Line. The flight lasted 10 minutes and the crew experienced zero gravity for more than a minute before returning to Earth.

The communication and astronomy student said going to space was one of her aspirations. She also interned with Blue Origin and founded Orbitelle, an organization that hopes to inspire women to pursue jobs in aerospace.
