The Roundup

Article Icon 1Concert Honors UNC Fraternity

Hundreds of people attended Flagstock 2024, the invite-only celebration for the UNC-Chapel Hill fraternity brothers who protected an American flag during anti-Israel protests last spring, near Chapel Hill on Monday night.

The event was a result of Pints for Patriots, an online fundraiser originally created to raise money for sending the fraternity kegs of beer. Donations exceeded $500,000, prompting organizers to expand the initiative.

The evening featured a flyover and live music from Five for Fighting, Big and Rich, Aaron Lewis, Lee Greenwood, and others, along with a tent for beer pong and cornhole.

Organizers have promised to donate any leftover money to charities but do not plan to hold another event.

Twenty-four states filed a brief supporting North Carolina and West Virginia’s appeals to the Supreme Court to reverse a ruling requiring taxpayer-funded health plans to cover medical treatments primarily sought by transgender people.

The Fourth Circuit ruled in April that North Carolina couldn’t ban the coverage of treatments favored by transgendered people, stating that barring procedures for transgender patients violated the Constitution.

The states disagreed with the 4th Circuit Court, saying they had the authority to make health plan coverage decisions. They also objected to the description of treatments like puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and irreversible surgeries as “medically necessary.”

The World Surf League hosted the WRV Outer Banks Pro in Nags Head last week, attracting hundreds of competitors for the men’s and women’s qualifying series.

Inbound two-to-four-foot wind swells enhanced the quarterfinal runs and allowed surfers to attempt more high-scoring skills. Fifteen-year-old Lanea Mons took full advantage of the waves and turned in the best score of the Round of 32.

Mons went on to win the women’s division, and Owen Moss won the men’s division. Both surfers made their second-straight finals appearance.
