Article Icon 1Massive Fireball Explodes Over NC

The American Meteor Society received over 150 reports of what NASA has classified as a “very bright” fireball that created a streak of bright light across the North Carolina and Tennessee sky Friday.

NASA described the rare fireball as an asteroidal fragment that weighed 1,000 pounds and was 2 feet in diameter before it disintegrated over North Carolina.

Experts said it moved south and eastward at 31,000 miles per hour. The American Meteor Society received reports from as far west as Kentucky and as far east as Wilmington.

Article Icon 1 RFK Jr. Sues NC Election Board

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. filed a lawsuit against the North Carolina State Board of Elections Friday to remove his name from the state’s November ballot.

Kennedy says his party, “We the People,” complied with the law and met the deadline to be removed.

He also claims the elections board knew of his desire to be removed the day he suspended his presidential bid but authorized printing the ballots anyway.

The lawsuit states the board has “irreparably harmed him,” according to a report from the News & Observer.

Article Icon 1Great Smoky Mountains Wildfire Expands

A wildfire in Great Smoky Mountains National Park has expanded, but not to the extent that was originally expected.

The fire started last week in a remote area near Hannah Mountain in Tennessee, and it was thought to have grown from 10 to 23 acres, but the National Park Service now believes it’s closer to 16 acres.

The wildfire has forced closure of Backcountry campsites 14, 15, and 16; Parson Branch Road; Rabbit Creek Trail from Abrams Creek to Cades Cove; and Hannah Mountain Trail from Parson Creek Branch Road to Little Bottom Trail.

The National Guard has provided four UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and crews from Knoxville’s 1-230th Assault Helicopter Battalion to bucket-drop hundreds of gallons of water on the wildfires.
