Answer: A vacuum ice cream freezer didn’t require cranking like earlier manual ice cream makers. Here’s how it worked. Ice cream ingredients were placed in the top opening chamber, then ice and salt were packed in the hollow wall around the chamber through the bottom opening. The ingredients were mixed and frozen while driving on a typical bumpy road of the day. It took about 45 minutes to make ice cream. Here’s what it looked like.
