Article Icon 1State Supreme Court Upholds Removal of RFK Jr. From Ballot

North Carolina’s Supreme Court upheld a Court of Appeals ruling to remove Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s name from the November 5 ballot.

In a 4-3 ruling Monday, the high court ordered the destruction of all printed ballots listing Kennedy’s name, stating the Independent candidate had clearly ended his campaign and a vote for him, therefore, would not count.

The majority noted that keeping Kennedy on the ballot risked disenfranchising “countless voters who mistakenly believe the plaintiff remains a candidate for office.”

The ruling delays sending out mail-in ballots by at least two weeks, but the court said reprinting new ballots is necessary to prevent voter confusion.

Article Icon 1NC Reports First Measles Case in 6 Years

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services confirmed Monday that a Mecklenburg County child has contracted measles, marking North Carolina’s first case of the contagious virus in six years.

NCDHH reported that the child’s family took all appropriate precautions to avoid spreading the virus, and that the child was likely exposed while traveling out of the country.

Measles spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently recommends two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine to prevent contraction.

Article Icon 142 Attorneys General Demand Warning for Social Media Apps

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, who is also the Democratic nominee for governor, voted with 41 other state attorneys general Tuesday to demand that Congress require a surgeon general warning label on social media apps.

The group cited research linking young peoples’ use of social media to depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.

The bipartisan group supports U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s view that social media is a primary cause of a mental health crisis among young Americans, and stated that they “share an abiding concern for the safety of the kids in our jurisdictions—and algorithm-driven social media platforms threaten that safety.”
