Article Icon 1Partisan Election Observers to Monitor Voting

A new elections law will install partisan “observers” in North Carolina polling places this November.

Touted by Republicans as an additional layer of voter security in a battleground state where presidential and gubernatorial races top the ballot, the law requires that observers are registered voters and possess “good moral character.”

Democrats want the observers to watch for disenfranchisement and voter intimidation, while Republicans ask that observers uphold their “Protect the Vote” campaign efforts.

County party officials will submit names of chosen observers to voting sites ahead of the election.

Article Icon 1Harris Campaigns in Charlotte and Greensboro

Vice President Kamala Harris will stop in Charlotte and Greensboro Thursday, just two days after her first–and possibly only–presidential debate with former president Donald Trump.

The Harris campaign reports she will appear in Charlotte at around 4:30 p.m. and in Greensboro around 8 p.m. Locations have not been announced.

On Monday, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff appeared in Raleigh with Gwen Walz, wife of Harris’ running mate Tim Walz, to discuss their view of the Trump-Vance campaign’s take on Project 2025 and abortion.

Article Icon 1Wildlife Crossings May Come to I-64

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, N.C. Department of Transportation, and N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission are working on a proposal for wildlife crossings along Interstate 64 in eastern North Carolina.

The proposal stems from a 12-mile stretch near the Alligator River Bridge where 19 red wolves have been killed by vehicular strikes. The crossings would reduce collisions and allow the wolves, which are the world’s most endangered wolf species, to maintain habitat connectivity.

Red wolves once roamed from Texas to New York, but they now live in only five North Carolina counties: Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington.

Red wolves aren’t the only animals falling victim to vehicular strikes. Just a few hours south of the Alligator River Bridge, an actual alligator was crossing U.S. 70 in Craven County Friday when it was hit by a car. Witnesses say the alligator survived.
