A North Carolina appeals court ruled unanimously Friday that presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s name must be removed from the state’s Nov. 5 presidential election ballot.

The three-judge panel instructed the State Board of Elections to distribute the ballots without Kennedy’s name on them the same day ballots were to be mailed out.

More than 2.9 million absentee and in-person ballots had already been printed across North Carolina’s 100 counties. Reprinting and assembling ballot packages could take more than two weeks.

Kennedy requested the removal of his name from North Carolina’s ballot after exiting the presidential race and endorsing former president Donald Trump. Trump also received an endorsement from the Fraternal Order of Police in Charlotte Friday.

Article Icon 1Republicans Announce Plan to Clear Private School Waitlist

North Carolina’s Republican House and Senate leaders announced Friday that $463 million of taxpayer funding will be used to eliminate the state’s waitlist for private school vouchers.

The Opportunity Scholarship program, created by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2014, awards scholarship funds that can be used to pay tuition and fees required for attending eligible private schools.

Last year, the General Assembly removed income caps for qualification, resulting in a surge in applications that left 55,000 children on the waitlist. The newly appropriated funds will help clear the list.

Five North Carolina hotels made Southern Living magazine’s 2024 list of the “12 Best Southern Hotels for Spotting Fall Foliage.”

The Swag in Waynesville took the No. 1 spot, while the Inn on Biltmore Estate in Asheville came in at No. 5 and High Hampton in Cashiers got No. 6. The Greystone Inn in Lake Toxaway took No. 11 and the Snowbird Mountain Lodge in Robbinsville finished up the list at No. 12.

In August, Southern Living published the 20 “Best Fall Trips in the South,” with four North Carolina locations making the list: Nantahala National Forest was No. 2, the Blue Ridge Parkway was No. 8, the Great Smoky Mountains was No. 14, and Asheville was No. 18.
