Question: How did the Wolfpack become NC State’s mascot?

Answer: In 1921, an anonymous alum wrote a letter about some of the NC State football players’ behavior being “unruly as a pack of wolves.” Within weeks, the alumni and student newspapers began referring to the team as “The Wolfpack.”

During the first three decades of athletics at the North Carolina School for Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, the school’s varsity teams had been nicknamed the “Techs,” “Farmers,” and “Aggies.” By 1921 the school was ready for a more consistent nickname, so “the Wolfpack” won out.
