Ocean water poured over N.C. Highway 12 on Pea Island for a sixth straight day Saturday, keeping Hatteras Island’s only road to the mainland closed.

Overwash near the Pea Island Visitor Center has wiped out more than 1,800 feet of dunes and damaged about 800 feet of pavement. It’s the stretch’s second washout in less than a month.

A three-boat emergency ferry now runs around the clock between Rodanthe and Stumpy Point, and residents reported hours-long waits at both terminals. Visitors remain barred from the island.

Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency in Dare and Hyde counties and sought federal help. “We need long-term solutions because NC 12 is essential,” Stein wrote.

Dare County Commissioner Mary Ellon Ballance wants the road moved west now. “You cannot continue to rebuild that road, it needs to be moved,” she said.

Corvid Technologies will build a 400,000-square-foot factory at its Mooresville headquarters, a $95 million expansion that adds 423 jobs.

The plant will engineer and manufacture vehicle launch systems for the defense contractor. The new engineering, electrical, assembly, and technician jobs will average $81,550 a year, compared with Iredell County’s average wage of $64,895.

Founded in 2004 as a small modeling and simulation firm, the employee-owned company has grown its manufacturing space from 8,000 to 800,000 square feet in two and a half years.

Gov. Josh Stein announced the deal Oct. 13. Corvid can collect up to $4.45 million in state job-development grants over 12 years, but only if it hits annual hiring and investment targets.

Two Navy veterans met their new service dogs Friday aboard the USS North Carolina in Wilmington.

Wilmington nonprofit Canines for Service paired Basil with Patrick Walker of Hollandale, Minnesota, and Bogey with Anne Leanos of Wilmington. Each dog is trained for its handler’s specific physical or psychological needs.

The group places dogs at no cost with veterans who have service-connected PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, or mobility limitations. It has completed more than 100 veteran partnerships since 1996.

Organizers picked the ship for its history: it took part in every major naval offensive in the Pacific during World War II and earned 15 battle stars.

“These dogs can do so much,” said Canines for Service spokesperson Erin Lewis.

There are men and women in North Carolina prisons who want to read the Bible but don’t have one. You can help meet that need through Prison Fellowship, which works in prisons across our state.

For someone behind bars, having a Bible of their own means being able to open it when questions surface, read it during quiet hours, and return to passages that offer hope.

Its message of forgiveness and new life can be a first step toward seeing the future differently.

Your gift helps make that opportunity possible. One Bible in one person’s hands is a simple, personal way to share God’s Word with someone seeking it.

Help provide a Bible today.
