Article Icon 1Supplies Arrive by Truck, Plane, and Mule

As Hurricane Helene’s death toll surpassed 130 Monday—with 40 in Buncombe County alone—food, water, and other essentials are being delivered to western North Carolinians via trucks, cargo planes, and mules.

Numerous state and federal agencies, organizations, and businesses are also assisting with deliveries.

Mountain Mule Packers’ mules brought in their first batch of supplies Monday. Each mule can carry about 200 pounds and travel into hard-to-reach mountainous areas, like Avery and Ashe counties in the high country—which is especially important right now, since sections of I-40, I-26, and I-240 are closed.

NCDOT is calling I-40 repairs a “long-term effort” and advising no travel to or around western North Carolina at this time.

Article Icon 1Port Strike Could Hamper Helene Recovery

An estimated 45,000 East and Gulf Coast port workers went on strike early Tuesday morning for the first time in 47 years. Shipments ranging from food to automobiles will be blocked at ports from Maine to Texas.

The strike involves 36 East Coast ports and could severely impact delivery of emergency assistance to victims of Hurricane Helene.

Those who need to buy new vehicles and rebuild or repair homes could face higher prices than usual and add strain to southeastern supply chains.

The strike is also expected to raise consumer prices ahead of the holiday season.

Article Icon 1Young NC Republican Voters Outnumber Democrats

A Carolina Journal study of North Carolina voting data reveals that 62% of voters between ages 18 and 34 plan on voting in the upcoming election, with significantly more of them Republicans (77%) versus Democrats (59%).

According to the study, 66% are females and 58% are males. Around 53% of the women say they will vote for the Democratic presidential candidate, while 33% plan to vote for the Republican.

The top issue for 51% of young voting women in North Carolina is abortion, while the top issue for 52% of young voting men is inflation.

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have prioritized connecting with North Carolina voters due to recent polls indicating a tight presidential race in the Tar Heel State.
