Question: Where did the founders of Salem, North Carolina, come from?

Answer: The founders of Salem were Moravian Brethren who originally came from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and first settled in Bethabara, North Carolina, on Nov. 17, 1753. Bethabara was the first Moravian settlement in North Carolina and served as a temporary base while plans for a central town—Salem—were developed. The Moravians were German-speaking Protestants who were originally from what is now the present-day Czech Republic.
