Question: What breed are the wild horses that live along North Carolina’s Outer Banks?

Answer: Feral Colonial Spanish Mustangs have called the Outer Banks home for more than 500 years. They descended from a herd brought here by explorers as early as the 1520s, and are recognized as the state horse of North Carolina. Some people believe they swam ashore from shipwrecks, while others say they were left behind as a result of failed settlements.
