Question: Which war led to the construction of Fort Ocracoke?
Answer: Fort Ocracoke was constructed for the Civil War by volunteers beginning May 20, 1861, the day North Carolina seceded from the Union to join the Confederacy. A historic marker commemorating the fort is located at 38 Irvin Garrish Highway, behind the National Park Service Visitor Center in Ocracoke. One side of the marker lists all the men from Ocracoke and Portsmouth islands who served in the Civil War.
