Article Icon 1DMV Registered Ineligible People to Vote

The U.S. Attorney’s Office launched an investigation of the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles in July after a Homeland Security Investigations report flagged the voter registrations of ineligible individuals, including illegal immigrants.

Examiners mistakenly marked some noncitizen applicants as U.S. citizens, contributing to registration errors, and credited a system glitch with further errors. The DMV later admitted that “the online system doesn’t verify citizenship status.” A separate three-month system error also permitted ineligible individuals to register to vote.

The probe revealed some illegal immigrants received citizen IDs for years and were registered to vote, even after notifying the DMV of their status, prompting the U.S. Attorney’s Office to call them victims of a failed DMV system.”

In response, the DMV, which handles up to 80% of the state’s annual voter registrations, has pledged to implement examiner reminders, provide citizenship training, add staff, modernize software, and coordinate with the State Board of Elections to purge ineligible voters.

Article Icon 1Wintry Mix Expected Friday

A potent low-pressure system moving in from the Gulf will deliver a “wet and wintry mess” across North Carolina on Friday, potentially disrupting morning commutes with slick roads and light accumulations.

The Triad and northern areas face a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with up to an inch of ice and snow possible along and north of I-40. The High Country could see 3 to 6 inches of snow above 3,500 feet.

A cold rain will likely fall across the southern Piedmont regions, though a brief wintry mix is possible early. Colder air will lock in, keeping statewide highs around 39 degrees under northeast winds of 5 to 10 mph.

Officials urge travelers to use caution, as even light precipitation could cause slippery conditions through Friday afternoon. Scattered rain remains in the forecast through the weekend and possibly into Monday.

Article Icon 1Some NC Schools Miss Health Mandates

A new North Carolina Department of Public Instruction survey reveals gaps in public schools’ compliance with physical activity requirements, with 12%—38 school boards—failing to incorporate the mandated 30 minutes of daily moderate-to-vigorous activity for K-8 students without daily physical education classes into their school mental health plans.

Mental health efforts fare better but remain incomplete, according to the survey. While most systems cover suicide prevention, substance abuse, and other required topics, not all provided training across all six mandated areas.

The survey report doesn’t reveal specific counties failing to meet the state’s physical activity or mental health training requirements.

This marks the first year leaders were required to submit integration plans, though some districts have fallen short for years.
