Article Icon 1Durham Housing Authority Seeks Loan

The Durham Housing Authority, the largest provider of affordable housing in Durham, has requested a $1.5 million loan from the City Council to help cover a $2 million deficit.

The deficit, which includes nearly $500,000 owed to Duke Energy, is the result of nearly 1,200 tenants who are behind on rent and a carbon monoxide crisis that cost the DHA $6 million. During the first three months of this year, only two-thirds of tenants paid their rent.

Each tenant pays $289 per month in rent, and the DHA serves more than 10,000 residents.

The City Council is expected to vote on granting the loan on June 16.
