Article Icon 1NC House Aims to Keep Kids Off Social Media

The North Carolina House filed a bill last week that would prohibit children under 14 from making social media accounts, and also force social media websites to permanently delete accounts held by children under 14.

Titled Social Media Protections for Minors Under 16, House Bill 301 does allow teens ages 14 or 15 to make an account, but only with parental consent. While sponsored by all Republicans, lawmakers said the bill received wide bipartisan support.

HB 301 was proposed the same week the state’s Child Fatality Task Force released its annual report asking legislators to “address addictive algorithms in social media that harm children.”

It also followed a Senate bill passed Tuesday with bipartisan support that would effectively ban mobile phone use at schools during class time.

Former Hamas hostages Keith and Aviva Siegel of Chapel Hill joined other former hostages on Thursday during a meeting with President Trump to advocate for bringing the remaining 59 hostages home.

Aviva was released 51 days after being taken hostage by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, while Keith was held captive for 484 days before being released on Feb. 1, 2025, as part of a cease-fire agreement.

Following the meeting with Trump, U.S. Sen. Ted Budd, R-NC, hosted a bipartisan meeting between the former hostages and Sens. Joni Ernst, R-IA; Richard Blumenthal, D-CT; and Jackie Rosen, D-NV. “We must continue pressuring Hamas to release the remaining hostages in Gaza, especially the five Americans,” Budd said.

Trump issued his “last warning” to Hamas Thursday, saying if the hostages aren’t released Israel will have “everything it needs to finish the job.”

Article Icon 1Fort Bragg Renaming Official

After 21 months as Fort Liberty, the Fayetteville base home to 10% of the entire U.S. Army is Fort Bragg once again. A redesignation ceremony on Friday featured the unveiling of a new sign and uncasing of Fort Bragg’s colors.

For almost 101 years Fort Bragg was named after Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg, a slave owner. In January, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth signed a memo renaming it after Pfc. Roland Bragg, who trained at Fort Bragg in 1943 and received a Silver Star and Purple Heart for his World War II service.

Bragg served with the 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division, and XVIII Airborne Corps. He was wounded and taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, Belgium.
