Article Icon 1Gang Motive Surfaces in House Party Shooting

Eight people have been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting at a Catawba County house party on June 1 that left one person dead and 11 injured. Prosecutors say the attack was gang-related and planned, with suspects firing into a crowd of more than 100 from an elevated hillside.

Five suspects have been charged with attempted first-degree murder, with 19-year-old Ke’Andre Mack confessing that he fired into the crowd. Mack is being held without bond.

Investigators said they have identified the gang involved but haven’t released a name yet. One female victim is cited in the charges but is not believed to be the sole target and may not have been injured.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office says more arrests could be coming.

A 29-year-old Asheville woman missing since January escaped from her alleged kidnapper and is now safe after months of being held captive.

Winston Eccleston, 26, of Waynesville, was arrested on May 22 and charged with first-degree kidnapping by the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office. The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office also filed charges against Eccleston, including first-degree kidnapping, second-degree forcible rape, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, and three counts of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Authorities said the woman was kidnapped “for sexual servitude.” Additional charges may be filed against Eccleston as the multi-agency investigation continues.

Eccleston had been staying at two area campgrounds, including one intended for flood victims, and was evicted from one in March due to unpaid rent.

Article Icon 1New Discoveries Shed Light on Lost Colony

Archaeologists Mark Horton and Scott Dawson have uncovered evidence suggesting that the Roanoke Colony settlers on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, who vanished between 1587 and 1590, likely assimilated with Native Americans on Hatteras Island.

Artifacts such as hammerscale, guns, and wine glasses indicate English iron-working and cultural integration, offering a potential answer to the 440-year mystery.

Hammerscale, metal fragments barely larger than grains of rice, is a byproduct of metal forging and dates back to the 16th century. Horton said it’s definitive proof of iron-working on Hatteras Island, which could have only been done by English colonists.

The Lost Colony play, which seasonally commemorates the colonists’ disappearance, is showing in Manteo through Aug. 23.
