Article Icon 1PNC Arena Renamed the Lenovo Center

PNC Arena—home of the Carolina Hurricanes and North Carolina State Men’s Basketball team—is now the Lenovo Center.

The Centennial Authority, a governing body created by the North Carolina General Assembly that owns the arena and surrounding 80 acres, met Thursday to approve the name change. The new agreement will last 10 years.

The renaming follows removal of PNC Arena signage and the Carolina Hurricanes’ release of renderings showing phase 1 of a planned entertainment district that will incorporate shopping, nightlife, and a 4,500-seat indoor concert venue.

Construction of the new district is expected to take up to 15 years, with phase 1 beginning in December 2025 and costing about $200 million.

Article Icon 1Harris Campaigns in Charlotte and Greensboro

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris held rallies at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte and Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro Thursday.

During her speech in Charlotte, Harris mocked her opponent, former President Donald Trump, for only having “concepts of a plan” to replace the Affordable Care Act, and challenged him to a second debate.

Harris’ visit came just two days after her first debate with Donald Trump, and was expected to create traffic snafus in both metropolitan areas.

Harris and Trump have prioritized visits to the Tar Heel State after recent polls show the state moved from “leans Republican” to “toss-up,” with Trump still claiming a slight lead.

Article Icon 1Artist Turns Twin Towers Steel Into Sculpture

Nationally renowned sculptor Jim Gallucci has created a 9/11 sculpture on South Elm Street in Greensboro made from 40,000 pounds of World Trade Center steel.

The steel comes from a 20-ton supply Gallucci gathered from a New Jersey scrapyard.

The sculpture is dedicated to the victims of 9/11 and resembles the Pentagon, featuring two steel beams rising above it that support a gate with 50 paper-shaped pieces of steel that appear to flutter to the ground.
