The North Carolina Department of Transportation has launched a statewide public comment period through Aug. 29 to help shape its next 10‑year infrastructure plan, which will span 2028–2037.

NCDOT is seeking suggestions on all six transportation modes—highways, rail, transit, ferries, aviation, and bicycle/pedestrian facilities—with goals to increase safety, reduce congestion, and promote economic growth.

Suggested projects can be as large-scale as an interstate improvement or as small as a new turn lane, but they can’t involve maintenance-related issues such as patching potholes or resurfacing.

Residents can provide feedback by taking a survey on NCDOT’s public input webpage or by attending weeklong drop-in sessions. Dates and locations of those sessions are listed on the public input page.

Article Icon 1Experts Release Hurricane Risk by State

Meteorology experts from Colorado State University released a final Atlantic hurricane forecast Wednesday that includes state-by-state risks and predicts a slightly above-normal season with eight hurricanes, three of which could be major.

North Carolina faces a 73% tropical storm chance and a 43% hurricane chance, according to the calculations, which are based on the chances of a storm passing within 50 miles of the state.

Florida faces the highest risk with an 89% chance of being impacted by a tropical storm and a 61% chance of being impacted by a hurricane.

Overall, there’s a 48% chance of a major hurricane making landfall somewhere along the U.S. coastline, with greater odds of striking the Gulf Coast (31%) than the East Coast (25%). View a PDF of the report here.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has launched a two‑year pilot program across 22 youth psychiatric residential facilities to implement Ukeru, a trauma‑informed crisis intervention system that eliminates physical restraint and seclusion.

This shift emphasizes comfort over control and is part of an $835 million investment in statewide mental health transformation.

According to NCDHHS, the word “Ukeru” is Japanese for “to receive.” A distinguishing component of the program is its use of soft, cushioned blocking pads that keep clients and staff safe during treatment.

The curriculum includes foundational information about brain development, trauma, communication, conflict resolution, de-escalation strategies, and protective physical skills. View a PDF of the pilot details here.
