Good Morning! On this day in 1780, Gen. Nathanael Greene took command of the battered Southern Army. He split his forces, setting up the Battle of Cowpens on Jan. 17, 1781. Then he lured Gen. Charles Cornwallis across North Carolina and fought a costly battle at Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781, leaving the British so weakened that Cornwallis was forced to abandon the Carolinas and eventually marched to Yorktown.

ICE Dismisses Rumors of Triangle Presence

Immigrant rights organization Siembra NC issued an alert Friday stating it received “credible reports” of more than 50 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents possibly arriving in the Triangle on Monday.

An ICE official responded that the reports are unfounded and based on rumors. The Department of Homeland Security stated, “Every day, DHS enforces the laws of the nation across the country. We do not discuss future or potential operations.”

Siembra NC is still advising caution for illegal immigrants and has received around 700 signups to participate in patrols that safely escort people to school and work.

Construction projects across Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem are also being impacted by workers’ fears of immigration-related arrests, with many projects facing delays due to worker absences.

Jordan’s 23XI Faces NASCAR in Antitrust Trial

A federal antitrust trial began Monday in Charlotte as 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports sue NASCAR and CEO Jim France.

The plaintiffs—23XI Racing owners Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, and Front Row Motorsports owner Bob Jenkins—own the only two teams that refused to sign the 2025 charter agreement. They allege the sanctioning body’s charter system and track ownership create an illegal monopoly that unfairly limits competition and revenue sharing.

NASCAR denies the allegations, stating its model is standard in motorsports and that teams may compete as non-chartered open teams.

The pretrial discovery phase exposed emails containing acrimonious statements about top NASCAR executives on both sides. The trial could result in permanent charters, track divestitures, or tripled damages if the teams prevail—or potential exclusion of 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports if NASCAR wins.

New Law Allows Armed Staff at Private Schools

A new North Carolina law took effect Monday that permits private schools to authorize armed teachers, staff, and volunteers to carry concealed handguns on campus.

House Bill 193, enacted in July after lawmakers overrode Gov. Josh Stein’s veto, requires a valid concealed carry permit, eight hours of annual training, and written school procedures to be shared with parents.

Unlike public schools, which remain restricted, the measure targets smaller private institutions that lack funds for professional security and is optional.

Supporters say it provides cost-effective protection for budget-strapped schools, while opponents warn of emotional tolls on children and risks of more guns in safe spaces.
