A WakeMed campus police officer was shot and killed Saturday morning during a struggle inside the emergency department lobby at WakeMed Garner Healthplex.

Authorities said Officer Roger Smith was fatally shot around 9 a.m. as staff rushed to secure the hospital and assist patients. Garner police confirmed a person of interest was taken into custody as state investigators joined the case.

Governor Josh Stein said on X, “My heart goes out to the family of Officer Roger Smith, who was killed protecting patients and their families. Law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe, and we are forever grateful for Officer Smith’s sacrifice.”

Thousands of North Carolina families received partial SNAP payments Friday after federal delays disrupted November funding.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved full benefits later in the day, allowing the state to begin processing remaining payments expected to reach families this weekend.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services said the issue affected more than 586,000 households, some of which saw as little as $4 added to their EBT cards.

Buxton’s beach is disappearing faster than scientists have ever recorded.

New 3D maps show the shoreline lost the equivalent of 800 dump trucks of sand and nine feet of elevation in just five weeks, following back-to-back tropical storms this fall.

Researchers say the erosion is so rapid that the coast no longer has time to recover between weather events.

At least 15 homes have already collapsed into the Atlantic since mid-September, and officials warn more could soon follow.

The Flyover

When our founder gave his dad, “Grandpa Jim,” a pair of Oricle hearing aids, nobody knew what to expect. For years, Jim had struggled to keep up with conversations—missing jokes, nodding along, and quietly withdrawing. But the moment he put them on, everything changed. Suddenly, voices were crisp, laughter rang out, and Jim was back in the middle of it all.

At one point, he even asked the family to “quiet down” because things were suddenly too clear. That moment stuck with us. For Jim, it wasn’t just about hearing better—it was about feeling present again. He loved them so much, he immediately asked for an extra pair, just in case.

Stories like this are why we’re proud to partner with Oricle. If you or someone you love has been waiting to take the step toward better hearing, now’s the time. Don’t miss out on life’s moments—see what Oricle can do for you today.

Our founder’s dad, “Grandpa Jim,” slipped on a pair of Oricle hearing aids—and the change was instant. For years, he’d been on the sidelines of family conversations. But suddenly, he could hear everything so clearly that he even asked everyone to quiet down. That’s how powerful the difference was.

The best part? He didn’t want to risk being without them again and immediately asked for backup pairs. It’s proof that better hearing is more than convenience—it’s a connection. If you’ve been thinking about it, this is your sign to finally make the change. Discover Oricle today
