Article Icon 1House Probes Potential Parents’ Rights Violation

Three N.C. House Oversight Committee Republicans have demanded a Dec. 3 hearing with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board Chair George Griffin and Superintendent Rodney Trice, citing deliberate violations of the state’s Parents’ Bill of Rights.

In an Oct. 30 letter, Reps. Brenden Jones (R-Columbus), Jake Johnson (R-Polk), and Harry Warren (R-Rowan) accused the district of ignoring the 2023 law requiring parental notification of K-4 gender identity instruction and student name or pronoun changes. They also referenced a January board vote and Griffin’s on-camera statement that compliance was “morally wrong.”

In addition, the lawmakers ordered the district to produce documents by Nov. 14 on CHCCS diversity, equity, and inclusion practices, warning they may breach federal civil rights laws.

A viral Oct. 23 Libs of TikTok post also accused Griffin of “bragging” about defying the Parents’ Bill of Rights and highlighted his statement that the law’s requirements on pronouns and K-4 gender lessons are “blatantly discriminatory.”

Article Icon 1Dual Lawsuits Challenge NC GOP Maps

Two federal lawsuits in North Carolina escalated this week with injunction motions to block GOP-drawn election maps before 2026.

In one, the NAACP and Marc Elias’ firm represent separate plaintiff groups challenging a mid-decade congressional redistricting plan that dismantles District 1, alleging racial gerrymandering, vote dilution, and First Amendment retaliation related to 2024 voting and litigation. A three-judge panel allowed the challenge, with plaintiffs seeking a Dec. 1 ruling.

In a related case, Common Cause and Watauga County voters are suing to halt 2023-24 laws that impose malapportioned county commissioner and school board districts, overriding a 71% voter-approved referendum that the General Assembly delayed from taking effect until 2034.

Republican leaders seek to intervene in the Watauga case while defending the congressional map, claiming political—not racial—motives. Both cases allege legislative overreach and are pending in federal court.
