Article Icon 1Judge Orders BOE to Certify Riggs as Winner

U.S. Chief District Judge Richard Myers ordered the North Carolina State Board of Elections (BOE) to certify Democrat Allison Riggs as the winner of the 2024 state Supreme Court race, rejecting Republican Jefferson Griffin’s ballot challenges.

Myers placed a one-week hold on the decision to give Griffin time to appeal. He rejected an April state Supreme Court ruling that had endorsed a ballot-curing process affecting between 1,675 and 5,700 ballots—most tied to overseas military and civilian voters who did not provide photo ID, and some from voters misclassified as “never residents.”

Myers sided with Riggs and others who argued that invalidating the ballots would violate the affected voters’ due process and equal protection rights under the U.S. Constitution.

The BOE meets today to discuss and possibly vote on legal matters. It’s still unclear how the new GOP majority will respond, particularly if Griffin appeals.

Police have arrested and charged 30-year-old Alexander Dickey in the killing of a North Carolina woman who was found dead from a gunshot wound to the chest inside a Columbia, South Carolina, home Saturday.

Logan Federico, a 22-year-old college student from Waxhaw, was in Columbia visiting friends at the time of her death.

On Sunday, Columbia police said Dickey first broke into a nearby home, stealing car keys and a firearm, then entered the house where Federico was staying, stole wallets and credit cards, and fatally shot her.

Dickey faces one count of murder, multiple counts of burglary, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and other charges. He was denied bond and remained in custody at the Lexington County Detention Center as of Monday evening.

Article Icon 1Trump Cuts Could Impact NC National Parks

President Trump released a discretionary budget request May 2 that would reduce funding for national parks, monuments, historic sites, seashores, and trails by nearly 25% and proposes transferring management of some sites to state governments.

North Carolina is home to 12 National Park Service sites, including Great Smoky Mountains National Park—America’s most visited national park.

While specific locations aren’t identified, the proposal suggests cutting more than $1.2 billion from the $4.8 billion park service budget. That includes $900 million in operational expenses, $73 million in construction funding, $77 million in recreation and preservation funding, and $197 million from the Historic Preservation Fund.

Critics warn that shifting sites to state control is financially unfeasible and could lead to closures or the privatization of public lands. Read the full proposal here.
