NC Braces for Level 3 Severe Weather

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration upgraded Central North Carolina’s severe weather risk to Level 3 Tuesday ahead of today’s storms.

A Level 3 indicates an “enhanced” risk of numerous and more persistent or widespread thunderstorms, with some qualifying as “intense.”

The storm line should pass through mountain counties around 6 a.m. and Triad counties around 10 a.m. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph are possible in those areas.

Storms will pass through Central North Carolina late morning into early afternoon. Damaging scattered wind gusts of up to 75 mph are the primary threat, with tornadoes and hail also possible. Rain totals of 1.5 inches or less are expected.

Some school districts, such as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, decided to close schools today, while other districts were still contemplating whether to close as of Tuesday evening.

Senate Bill Would Ban DEI in Public Schools

North Carolina Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger, R-Guilford/Rockingham, filed a bill Monday that would prohibit public and charter schools from having diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices or employees.

Titled “Eliminating ‘DEI’ in Public Education,” Senate Bill 227 would also ban the teaching of “divisive concepts,” such as one race or sex being inherently superior to another; individuals, by virtue of their race or sex, being inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive; and all Americans not being created equal, among others.

The Senate bill follows the Feb. 21 filing of House Bill 171, which proposes a ban on the promotion, funding, and implementation of DEI programs within state agencies.

NCHSAA Finalizes Conference Realignment

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors voted 16-1 Monday to formally accept the 2025-29 conference realignment plan, which divides member schools into eight classifications ranging from 1A to 8A.

A major revision impacts northwestern North Carolina, where two conferences were created—one with eight 2A/3A/4A schools and the other with six 3A/4A schools.

Less far-reaching changes were made based on appeals from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, Swansboro High School in Onslow County, and Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh.

Around 30 appeals were made during the Monday meeting from schools around the state, but most were denied.

The NCHSAA is expected to release the finalized document to member schools tomorrow. View all three drafts here.
