Article Icon 1Heat Index Forecast to Exceed 100

A dangerous heat wave is building across North Carolina this week, with heat index values forecast to exceed 100°F statewide by Friday as temperatures climb into the mid-90s and humidity surges through the weekend.

Duke Energy is urging customers across the Carolinas to reduce electricity consumption—especially during afternoon peak hours—as the surge in air conditioning demand threatens to strain the regional power grid.

The timing is particularly concerning: North Carolina already ranks 10th nationally for household anxiety over rising energy costs, meaning this week’s spike in cooling bills will land hardest on residents already stretched thin.

Midweek rain chances could offer brief relief, but forecasters say temperatures will rebound quickly—and the heat index will remain dangerous through at least this weekend.

Article Icon 1NC Charter Schools Could Double Next Year

North Carolina is poised to nearly double the number of remote charter academies next school year, with 19 expected to operate compared to 10 this year, according to state education officials.

This surge follows 2023 legislation enabling traditional charter schools to launch standalone online programs or virtual academies. Four statewide virtual schools are included in the total.

The growth stems from rule changes that streamlined approvals and granted expedited paths for established charters with sufficient enrollment. Examples include Mountain Community Online School, which partners with Edmentum for live instruction and success coaches.

Overall charter enrollment has risen 26% since 2019, surpassing 161,000 students. However, academic challenges persist, with proficiency below pre-pandemic levels and college readiness declining. Officials note increased administrative demands and plan tailored renewal processes for remote programs.

Article Icon 1Coastal Resort Melds RVs and ‘Casitas’

A new luxury resort just outside Holden Beach in Brunswick County is set to open in September, blending premium motorcoach sites with small “casita” cottage units in what developers are calling a first-of-its-kind coastal North Carolina concept.

The Carolina Coastal Motorcoach Resort is designed as a gated community for upscale RV travelers, featuring resort-style amenities alongside the casitas.

All lakefront motorcoach lots also feature convenient pull-in pads and generous space for a one-bedroom Casita, outdoor living features, and personalized enhancements.

Brunswick County—already home to booming beach communities like Oak Island, Ocean Isle Beach, and Holden Beach—has seen rapid development as coastal North Carolina attracts retirees and remote workers from across the Southeast.
