Article Icon 1Republicans Override 8 Stein Vetoes

State Senate and House Republicans spent most of Tuesday overriding eight of 14 vetoes issued by Gov. Josh Stein, enacting the bills into law. There’s no immediate deadline for overriding the remaining vetoes.

Two bills that will become law enforce efforts to counter illegal immigration: the Criminal Illegal Alien Enforcement Act (HB 318) and the North Carolina Border Protection Act (SB 153).

Other overridden vetoes create laws that expand the Charter Schools Review Board’s power (SB 254) and allow private school leaders to authorize teachers, parents, or volunteers to carry guns on campus for security purposes (HB 193). The Freedom to Carry NC Act (SB 50), allowing permitless concealed carry for adults 18 and up, also passed the Senate and is now law.

Also set to become law are the Power Bill Reduction Act (SB 266), the Personal Privacy Protection Act (SB 416), and the Prevent Sexual Exploitation/Women and Minors Act (HB 805).

Republicans hold a supermajority in the Senate but are one seat shy of a supermajority in the House. Keep up with future legislative activity via the General Assembly dashboard.

Article Icon 1Trump Admin Investigates Duke Law Journal

The Trump administration launched an investigation Monday into allegations that Duke University School of Law’s journal discriminated “on the basis of race, color, and/or national origin” when selecting editors for its publication.

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights initiated the probe following a June 30 Washington Free Beacon report that the Duke Law Journal sent a secret memo to minority applicants offering extra points for highlighting race and gender in personal statements.

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sent a joint letter to Duke’s leadership requesting the creation of a “Merit and Civil Rights Committee” to work toward a quick and mutual resolution of the alleged violations.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Duke had not commented on the investigation.

Article Icon 1NC Ranks 4th in Wage Theft

A study by Shirazi Law Firm based on U.S. Department of Labor data found that North Carolina is the fourth worst state for wage theft, with 84,621 total violations reported, or 766.08 per 100,000 residents.

According to the Department of Labor, $10.8 million in agreed back wages have been paid to 10,284 North Carolina workers.

The three states with higher wage theft per 100,000 residents are Indiana with 6,536.93, Tennessee at 3,407.57, and Ohio at 919.33.

North Dakota ranks lowest with just 34.52 per 100,000 residents.
