Article Icon 1NBA Gambling Ring Implicates NC A&T

Federal prosecutors are investigating a suspected gambling ring for its role in two NBA betting cases, as well as unusual wagering behavior connected to three men’s basketball teams, including North Carolina A&T.

During the first half of the Jan. 9 game between the North Carolina A&T Aggies and the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens, Sportsbook sources noticed that the first-half point spread shifted from Delaware -2 to -3.5, and the point spread on the finished game closed at -4.5. First-half lines are usually equal to or around 50% of the full-game point spread.

The Blue Hens ended up beating the Aggies 98-88.

North Carolina A&T athletic director Earl Hilton stated in an email that three basketball players had recently been suspended for violating “well-established team rules,” but declined to comment further.

Article Icon 1Constitutional Carry Bill Gets 26 Sponsors

North Carolina General Assembly Republicans are working toward legalizing constitutional carry in a new bill filed last week with 26 sponsors.

If passed, House Bill 5 would legalize permitless concealed carry and make North Carolina the 30th state to allow gun owners to carry a weapon without a permit.

The bill also authorizes elected state officials to “carry a concealed firearm while performing their official duties if the official has a concealed handgun permit.”

During the last legislative session, a constitutional carry bill failed to gain traction in the Senate. The bill’s lead sponsor, Rep. Keith Kidwell, R-Beaufort, says Senate Republicans should reconsider their stance since the party platform clearly supports the Second Amendment.
