Article Icon 1Fort Liberty Renamed Fort Bragg

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum Monday declaring the U.S. Army would change the name of Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg—but there’s a twist. The fort is not being renamed after Confederate General Braxton Bragg.

Hegseth said the base will be named after Private First Class Roland L. Bragg, a World War II Purple Heart and Silver Star recipient who was once stationed at the Fayetteville base.

During World War II, Roland Bragg drove a stolen German ambulance 20 miles to transport a wounded soldier to an Allied Forces hospital in Belgium.

In June 2023, the base’s name was officially changed to Fort Liberty following a 2022 Congressional recommendation to remove Braxton Bragg’s name due to his ties to the Confederacy.

Hegseth said the Army will take all necessary and appropriate steps to implement the name change, and stated “Bragg is back” while signing the memorandum.

Article Icon 1UNC System Ends DEI Course Requirements

The UNC system directed 17 university chancellors across North Carolina on Feb. 5 to suspend any mandated course credits related to diversity, equity, or inclusion, effective immediately.

UNC System Senior Vice President for Legal Affairs Andrew Tripp ordered the suspension following President Trump’s Jan. 21 executive order “ending illegal discrimination and restoring merit-based opportunity.”

Tripp warned that if institutions don’t comply with the executive order, they risk losing over $1.4 billion in “critical federal research” funding.

Students already enrolled in a now-suspended program requirement “shall be deemed converted immediately into a general elective requirement” Tripp wrote, adding that students can remain in the course or withdraw without penalties.

Article Icon 1Explicit AI Photos of NCSU Women Posted

NC State University police told WRAL that 28 women reported artificial intelligence was used to produce sexually explicit images of them without their consent.

The women did not create or share the images, according to a Nov. 1, 2024 search warrant that states the photos had been discovered weeks earlier on a website that allows users to share pornographic images and videos.

Many of the targets were sorority members. Some of the victims’ names were included in the files.

An NC State spokesperson said the investigation is active and ongoing, and that all relevant resources have been provided to the university’s Panhellenic community.
