Lottery Sales Rise as Education Funding Falls

A new state audit reveals that North Carolina’s Education Lottery reported record sales of $6.6 billion during fiscal year 2025, a significant jump from $5.4 billion the previous year. However, funds transferred to public education dropped from $1.07 billion in 2024 to $1.05 billion in 2025.

The audit showed that just 16 cents from every $1 spent on lottery tickets or other games went toward public school funding in 2025.

The share of lottery revenue allocated to schools has steadily declined, falling from 23% in 2023 to 20% in 2024 and 16% in 2025.

Higher player payouts and fewer jackpots contributed to the reduced proceeds despite booming overall sales. State Auditor Dave Boliek noted that rising ticket sales should boost school funding, saying flat contributions over three years “raise a lot of questions.”

NC Restaurants Earn Yelp and Eater Awards

Three North Carolina restaurants earned spots on Yelp’s Top 100 US Restaurants 2025, all hailing from the Piedmont Triad region and highlighting highly rated casual dining based on user reviews, ratings, and submission volume.

Odeh’s Mediterranean Kitchen in High Point ranked No. 13, praised for its Middle Eastern dishes like shawarma platters and baklava. Freeman’s Grub & Pub in Greensboro ranked No. 35, featuring New American fare such as banh mi sandwiches and hot honey chicken. Nick’s Old Fashion Hamburger House in Lexington ranked No. 60, thanks to its classic burgers and pork chop sandwiches.

Meanwhile, the 2025 Carolinas Eater Awards celebrated fusion cuisine, naming Albertine in Charlotte Best New Restaurant overall for American South dishes inspired by Middle Eastern traditions. Peregrine in Raleigh earned Best New North Carolina Restaurant for its Bangladeshi-Southern dishes. And Potential New Boyfriend in Asheville was awarded Best New North Carolina Bar for its community-focused ice cream and wine spot.
