Article Icon 1Chantal Triggers Severe Flood Damage

Tropical Storm Chantal inflicted severe damage across Central North Carolina Sunday after as much as 8 inches of rain fell in some areas, despite the storm being downgraded to a tropical depression.

Durham, Chatham, Orange, Moore, and Person counties were hardest hit, with states of emergency declared in Moore and Orange.

Early Monday, the Eno River crested in Durham at 25.6 feet, surpassing the previous record of 23.6 feet. The Haw River crested at 32.5 feet, eclipsed only by its height during Hurricane Fran in 1996, when it reached 32.8 feet.

Floods washed out over 100 roads and highways, including part of U.S. 1, and over 19,000 households were without power as of Monday afternoon. Sandra Hirschman, 83, of Pittsboro, died when her car became submerged in Chatham County, and crews are searching for two people who went canoeing at Jordan Lake on Sunday.
