The Roundup

Article Icon 1Erin Spurs OBX Flood Watch, Evacuations

Hurricane Erin regained Category 4 status Monday morning after losing strength over the weekend. As of 11 a.m., it was sustaining winds of 140 mph and is forecast to create life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along the East Coast this week.

Coastal flooding and ocean overwash are expected today through Thursday, with portions of N.C. Highway 12 on Hatteras Island likely impassable for several days.

Dare County officials declared a state of emergency Sunday at 6 p.m. and issued a mandatory evacuation for all of Hatteras Island, including Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras. Hyde County officials enacted a state of emergency for Ocracoke Island and issued mandatory evacuations effective Sunday at 8 p.m. for visitors and 6 a.m. today for residents.

The high surf advisory is active from noon today through 8 a.m. Friday for the northern Outer Banks, Hatteras Island, Ocracoke Island, Carteret County, and Onslow County. Follow Erin’s latest track here.

Article Icon 1UNC Health Aims to Combine ER and Urgent Care

UNC Health submitted regulatory applications to create a network of freestanding facilities that combine urgent care with emergency services under one roof.

The health system says the new model will improve access to care and reduce costs by ensuring patients are quickly directed to the right department for care.

UNC Health plans to partner with Texas-based Intuitive Health, which has tested the model in other states, and hopes to open two hybrid facilities in North Raleigh and Apex in 2027.

The concept offers “a more convenient, more efficient model of care that meets patients where they are,” said Intuitive Health CEO Thom Herrmann, since patients “no longer need to choose between ER and urgent care.”
