Question: What was North Carolina State University’s original name?
Answer: North Carolina State University was established as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts on March 7, 1887. Since 1887, the university’s name has been changed three times. It was renamed the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering in 1917, then to the cumbersome North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh in 1963 (after a very unpopular attempt at naming it the University of North Carolina at Raleigh), and finally to North Carolina State University at Raleigh in 1965. Today, it is referred to simply as North Carolina State University.
