Question: How did McAdenville become known as Christmas Town?
Answer: There are multiple theories. Our State magazine investigated the matter and found that one possibility involved five men who fashioned a giant “Merry Christmas” sign and placed it on the hill above the volunteer fire department along the lake. Another theory is that a local textile mill owner replaced McAdenville Methodist Church’s lights after a would-be Grinch stole them. A third theory is that in 1956, local Men’s Club members decorated nine trees in front of the McAdenville Community Center. Regardless of which theory is correct, McAdenville has been North Carolina’s Christmas Town since the 1950s.
