Question: What are North Carolina’s official freshwater and saltwater fish?

Answer: The brook trout is North Carolina’s state freshwater fish and the channel bass is the state saltwater fish.

The brook trout can only be found in the pure, high-elevation streams of Southern Appalachia; and channel bass—also known as redfish, red drum, and puppy drum—live in small tidal creeks, deep tidal rivers, flooded marshes, crashing surf, and rough-water shoals.
