Question: What’s a Carolina Bay?

Answer: Carolina Bays are oval depressions, primarily near the North Carolina-South Carolina border. There are about 900 notable ones—80% of which are in North Carolina. The bays are oriented northwest-southeast and often have a southeastern sand rim. Sizes range from hundreds of feet to 6 miles. Some, like Lake Waccamaw, hold water, while others are dry or boggy.
