Question: How much of Tennessee used to be considered North Carolina?
Answer: All of modern Tennessee was originally part of North Carolina territory. In 1777, North Carolina created Washington County, which initially encompassed all of modern Tennessee. Between 1779 and 1788, North Carolina created additional counties within this territory: Sullivan, Greene, Davidson, Sumner, Hawkins, and Tennessee County. North Carolina ceded the territory to the United States in 1789, and Tennessee became a state in 1796.
