Question: What counties did Carolana include:
Answer: In 1664, Carolana’s initial three counties loosely covered Albemarle, Clarendon, and Craven. All were poorly defined and unsurveyed. Clarendon and Craven were later abolished. Albemarle evolved into precincts such as Chowan and Perquimans by 1668, encompassing lands already settled by early Virginians along the Albemarle Sound. Clarendon was defined as the area around the Cape Fear River, where Sir John Yeamans established the colony known as Charles Town (present-day Brunswick County). Craven was intended to include all lands south of the undefined Clarendon County to what is present-day northern Florida.
