Question: Who was the original Wingina?

Answer: The original Wingina, also known as Pemisapan, was the Algonquian-speaking chieftain of the Secotan people on Roanoke Island and the adjacent mainland in present-day North Carolina. He led his tribe during Sir Walter Raleigh’s 1580s colonization efforts, with initially friendly interactions before relations soured. He was killed by English forces on June 1, 1586.
