Answer: Polk County is named after Revolutionary War officer Col. William Polk, first cousin to Samuel Polk, the father of President James K. Polk. William Polk served in the Continental Line and took part in battles at Germantown, Brandywine, Eutaw Springs, and Cowan’s Ford. He also represented Davidson County (present-day Tennessee) and Mecklenburg County in the House of Commons, and was appointed the state’s collector of revenue in 1791.
