Question: What was the first federal patent filed in North Carolina?

Answer: G. F. Saltonstall of Fayetteville registered a design for a cotton-cleaning machine, and for that, he received the first federal patent issued to a North Carolinian in 1801. Since 1790, North Carolinians have obtained thousands of patents, with about 2,000 issued during the nineteenth century.
