Question: What song opened Chapel Hill-based WXYC’s first broadcast in 1977?
Answer: Joni Mitchell’s You Turn Me On I’m a Radio was the first song WXYC played when it signed on the air on March 17, 1977. Listen to it here.
Bonus info: The station was launched after a student referendum in 1973 funded the conversion from its carrier-current predecessor WCAR. The switch to FM cost $35,000 and took two years. Winter freezes delayed antenna installation on UNC’s water tower, pushing the launch from the planned January start to mid-March.
