Question: How did Airlie Gardens get its name?
Answer: In 1884, Seaside Park Improvement Company members Sarah Green, Pembroke Jones, and several others purchased a parcel of land from the Seaside Park Improvement Company in Wilmington that would later become the core of Airlie Gardens. Green married Jones that year in Fayetteville. In 1886, she purchased the Seaside Park Property for herself. Soon after, her husband named the property Airlie in honor of his ancestral home in Scotland.
Bonus info: “Airlie” is rooted in Scottish heritage and is derived from the ancient Gaelic language. It combines “air,” meaning “eagle,” and “liath,” meaning wood or grey. Together, “Airlie” means “Eagle Wood” or “Grey Wood,” and represents the majestic nature of the eagle and its habitat.
