Question: What were the boundaries of Carolina determined by in the 1663 charter?

Answer: Under the charter of 1663, Carolina’s boundaries were defined as all the land from 31 to 36 north latitude and horizontally from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The boundaries were also determined by geographic features believed to be at those latitudes. For example, the northern boundary was equated with Lucke Island’s latitude, which is present-day Albemarle Sound; and the southern boundary was defined by the latitude of the mouth of the St. Matthias River, which we now call the St. Johns River near present-day Jacksonville.
