The Roundup

Article Icon 1Flooding, Landslides, and Tornadoes

Helene reached hurricane status Wednesday morning, and the National Hurricane Center expects additional strengthening later today as the storm approaches Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The North Carolina mountains could get 5-10 inches of rain, while 3-5 inches is forecast for the western Piedmont. The rest of North Carolina will likely only get 1-3 inches of rain.

North Carolina’s mountain region is also at risk of downed trees, flash flooding, landslides, and isolated tornadoes. Strong winds, power outages, and flooding are also likely across the area.

The 2025 U.S. News Best Colleges rankings are out and North Carolina schools made a strong showing.

Duke University was the highest-ranked college in North Carolina, moving up one place nationally to tie for No. 6 with California Institute of Technology.

While UNC-Chapel Hill moved down five spots to tie for No. 27 with the University of Southern California, it remains the top public university nationwide in the “best value” category.

Wake Forest University ranked No. 46 among top public national universities and North Carolina State came in at 58. See the full list here.

Article Icon 1 Amtrak Route Includes 3 Triangle Stops

Amtrak will temporarily combine two long-distance routes to provide roundtrip access between Chicago and Miami beginning Nov. 10.

The new route expands North Carolinians’ travel options by including stops in Selma, Raleigh, and Cary.

The Silver Star train, which currently travels between New York and Florida, and the Capitol Limited, which travels between Chicago and Washington, D.C., will be combined into one route called the Floridian.

The new route’s purpose is to free up train cars and reduce traffic at New York’s Penn Station while Amtrak restores and modernizes tunnels under the East River.

There’s one downside: Triangle residents will lose a direct option to cities between Washington, D.C., and New York.
