Article Icon 1Election Day Recap

North Carolina Republican voters helped secure a decisive win for President-elect Donald Trump early Wednesday morning after casting ballots in greater numbers than they did four years ago—especially in hurricane-ravaged sections of the state.

Democrat Attorney General Josh Stein handily won the gubernatorial race over Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson and vowed “to work across party lines to do what’s best for North Carolina.”

North Carolina voters flipped three U.S. House seats from Democratic to Republican, but the District 1 race has not yet been called due to Republican challenger Laurie Buckhout requesting a recount against Democratic incumbent Don Davis.

Multiple seats flipped parties in the North Carolina House, but the losses offset the gains, and Democrats appeared to have broken the Republican’s veto-proof supermajority.

Republican Jefferson Griffin currently maintains a razor-thin lead over Democrat Allison Griggs in the race for the N.C. Supreme Court 6 seat. Check the latest vote count here.

The N.C. Board of Elections extended voting hours Tuesday by 30 minutes at a Burke County polling station due to a laptop issue, and at a Wilson County polling station due to staff shortcomings and faulty printers.

Four of 10 people at the Wilson County precinct hoping to vote during this time returned later once corrections had been made. All votes cast after 7:30 p.m. at the two affected precincts were considered provisional votes, per state law.

The NCBOE didn’t publish results in Burke or Wilson counties until voting ended at both impacted precincts.

Article Icon 1 I-40 and Blue Ridge Parkway Reopening News

NCDOT announced that westbound I-40 lanes on the North Carolina-Tennessee border could reopen by New Year’s Day.

Contractors are expected to complete a stabilization project that will secure the westbound lanes and provide enough space for vehicles to travel at 40 mph on one lane in each direction over a 9-mile stretch of the Pigeon River gorge.

This configuration also allows enough room for contractors to continue working on long-term repairs to the eastbound lands damaged by Hurricane Helene.

In other road reopening news, another stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway damaged by Helene has reopened. Travelers can now access the section between mileposts 382.5 and 393.6, which includes the French Broad Overlook.
