Article Icon 1Wake School Board Approves Reassignment Plan

Wake County Public School System’s Board of Education unanimously voted Tuesday to approve a student reassignment plan that impacts 3,500 students. Parents spoke out against the plan prior to the vote, urging board members to oppose it.

WCPSS is the state’s largest school system and nation’s 14th largest. It serves roughly 160,000 students.

The reassignments will shift students to different schools—with the biggest impact on elementary schools—in order to address ongoing growth and populate four new schools in southern Wake, where growth is most prominent.

The new schools are Pleasant Pines Elementary (Apex), Rex Road Elementary (Holly Springs), Bowling Road Elementary (Fuquay-Varina), and Felton Grove High School (Apex).

Article Icon 1Candidate Wants NCBOE Member Recusal

Republican State Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin filed a motion to request that N.C. Board of Elections member Siobhan Millen recuse herself from participating in the election protests surrounding the Supreme Court Justice race recount, due to a conflict of interest.

Millen is married to Press Millen, a partner at Womble Bond Dickenson, the law firm representing Griffin’s opponent, Justice Allison Riggs.

Griffin filed the motion 15 minutes before the board began a meeting to certify the finalized results of the Nov. 5 general election. The board also planned to consider subpoena requests related to Griffin’s protests during the meeting.

Members agreed to postpone their discussion of the requests so they can consider the potential conflict of interest. Griffin’s protests included a list of voters he alleges had incomplete information on their voter registration form, making them ineligible to vote.

If Griffin loses, Republicans will still maintain a bench majority.

A new report rounds up six Hallmark Christmas movies filmed in North Carolina and one made-for-NBC TV movie starring the iconic Katherine Hepburn.

One Christmas (1994) features Hepburn’s final TV scene filmed in an unknown Wilmington location. The city’s Bellamy Mansion also makes an appearance in the movie.

Scenes in Hallmark’s Christmas in Harmony (2021), Christmas in Conway (2013), and USS Christmas (2020) were also filmed in Wilmington.

A Christmas Love Story features scenes filmed in Charlotte, Gastonia, and Monroe; and Christmas at the Grey Horse (2021) was filmed in Tryon. Most recently, A Biltmore Christmas (2023) was filmed at Biltmore Estate in Asheville.

Dear Flyover North Carolina Reader,

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope your day is filled with family, food, and football—and I hope you take a little time to consider the blessings we enjoy in this great land.

Today, I’m thankful for turkey (the white meat, of course), for my two children (even when they act like turkeys; ever had a bow and arrow fired at your head during a Zoom call?), and for the freedom to enjoy it all.

Here’s another one of mine: The demand in America for biased, elitist news media is dropping. MSNBC’s audience is down 39% since October, and Comcast has announced plans to spin the network off into a new company. (The new entity will be named… SpinCo. These things really do write themselves. :slightly_smiling_face:)

It’s a bright sign for America’s future that folks are ditching the propaganda factories, and I want as many of those people as possible to join our movement for reliable news.

Here’s another thing I’m thankful for: over 100,000 of you have already joined Flyover North Carolina, and you’ve been telling your friends about us! I’m grateful for each of you.

Today, if Flyover North Carolina is on your list of things to be thankful for, would you help me with a donation? Your direct support is the best way to help us cover our costs, and it would mean a lot to me.
