The Roundup

Article Icon 1Border Op Continues, Bovino Responds to Stein

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents conducted immigration sweeps across the Triangle on Tuesday, detaining illegal immigrants and prompting some businesses to temporarily close.

Durham Public Schools reported a drop in attendance among Latino students, who make up 35% of enrollment throughout the district. The president of the North Carolina Association of Educators’ Wake County chapter said dozens of teachers there noted absences were “definitely up.”

Democratic lawmakers condemned CBP and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for “operating in the shadows,” with Democratic first-term Gov. Josh Stein urging residents to record misconduct and describing the agents’ tactics as “paramilitary.”

CBP commander Greg Bovino fired back at Stein on social media, stating, “When you spout lies about a lawful law enforcement operation, you spark something in weaker-minded people.

The FBI has issued an urgent warning about the 764 network, a global online group of violent predators who befriend vulnerable children as young as 9 and coerce them into producing child sexual abuse material and committing acts of self-harm, animal cruelty, and even suicide.

The FBI now refers to 764 as a “new form of modern-day terrorism” and has confirmed victims in North Carolina.

Prasan Nepal of High Point, arrested and charged last spring with operating a global child exploitation enterprise, allegedly helped 764 recruit new members based on “the quality and notoriety of the content they produced.”

The FBI urges parents to monitor apps, know their children’s usernames and passwords, and report threats immediately.

Article Icon 1NCDHHS Amasses $386M in Lapsed Salaries

A new state auditor report reveals the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) generated $386 million in lapsed salary funds from unfilled positions during the 2024-25 fiscal year, accounting for 30.6% of all such funds statewide—the highest of any agency.

The report is the first released by the state’s Division of Accountability, Value, and Efficiency.

Auditor Dave Boliek criticized the practice, saying “bureaucracy is being placed ahead of the needs of North Carolinians” by leaving jobs vacant to supplement budgets while cutting Medicaid services. NCDHHS defended using the funds for overtime, temporary employees, and operational needs amid staffing shortages, calling the report misleading and lacking context.

The findings come as the department faces a $319 million Medicaid shortfall, prompting cuts to provider reimbursement rates.
