Dozens of NC Schools Defy Law, Start Earlier

About 30 North Carolina public school districts have approved calendars for the 2026-27 school year that start earlier than state law permits, according to a new Department of Public Instruction report.

School leaders say the earlier start allows for balanced semesters, enabling students to finish fall testing before winter break and better prepare for Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams. Some districts also cite cost savings from aligning with community college schedules.

The districts starting earlier are primarily in central and western counties, including Granville, Person, Harnett, and Montgomery.

The 2004 law aims to protect North Carolina’s tourism by delaying the school start until late August. Coastal districts are largely complying.

Hurricanes Host Game 2 Tonight

The Carolina Hurricanes return to the Lenovo Center in Raleigh tonight for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, trailing 1-0 after a gut-punch 5-4 home loss on Tuesday.

Nikolaj Ehlers gave the Canes a 2-0 first-period lead with two goals, but the Golden Knights answered three times before Tomas Hertl scored the go-ahead goal with 3:24 remaining off a give-and-go with Colton Sissons. Carolina had the game in hand twice and couldn’t hold it.

North Carolina’s hockey faithful will pack the Lenovo Center tonight as the Canes look to even the series. Game 2 airs on ABC, with the Canes needing a win to avoid falling into a 0-2 hole.

A Canes victory evens the best-of-seven and keeps home-ice advantage in play.

Mallard Creek High Gets Title Back

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association overturned the disqualification of Mallard Creek High School relay anchor Nyan Brown, reinstating the Charlotte school’s boys track team as co-state champion alongside C.E. Jordan High in Durham after a ruling that drew national attention.

Brown was disqualified for flashing five fingers—believed to represent the team potentially earning a fifth state team championship—as he crossed the finish line first in the 4×400-meter relay at the 8A State Championship. The footage went viral and drew national coverage.

The Independent Interscholastic Athletic Appeals Board reversed the call after “Mallard Creek presented clear and convincing evidence that the student-athlete did NOT engage in unsporting or unacceptable conduct.”

Mallard Creek and C.E. Jordan share the 8A overall title, with Mallard Creek and Hough High School named co-champions in the relay. The ruling restores the team points the Mavericks lost when Brown’s disqualification stood.
