Article Icon 1New State Immigration Rules Take Effect

New immigration rules took effect this week across all North Carolina counties, requiring law enforcement to verify citizenship status for any person arrested for serious crimes.

The new legislation, known as HB 10, mandates that police cooperate with federal immigration officials during arrests for crimes such as homicide and child abuse.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can also detain people for up to 48 hours before being released by law enforcement.

The State House overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of HB 10 on November 19 with a vote of 72-44.

The N.C. State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA) awarded more than 54,000 Opportunity Scholarships on Tuesday in a record expansion for the program that gives North Carolina students taxpayer funding to attend private schools.

The new scholarships are now available to all North Carolina families regardless of income, diverging from previous income limits for eligibility.

North Carolina’s House of Representatives voted on November 18 to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of the $463.5 million Opportunity Scholarship expansion.

Families who received an award offer have until December 27 to accept.
