Article Icon 1 Belichick Agrees to Deal with UNC

UNC has officially agreed to terms on a three-year $30 million contract with the legendary Bill Belichick to become the team’s next head football coach.

Multiple sources reported Tuesday that the offer had been made to the 72-year-old, six-time Super Bowl champion coach.

Known as the architect of the New England Patriots dynasty from 2001-2019, Belichick is one of the winningest NFL coaches of all time.

Robert Poitras, owner of Carolina Brewery in downtown Chapel Hill, expressed excitement about how Belichick joining the program might impact businesses there, saying the hire puts UNC football “back on the national map again.”

Article Icon 1Senate Bill 382 Becomes Law

Senate Bill 382 became law Wednesday after the GOP-led state House of Representatives overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of it by a party-line vote of 72-46.

Described as “unconstitutional” and a “massive power grab” by Cooper, SB382 directs $227 million to Hurricane Helene disaster relief from the state savings reserve and enacts changes that weaken the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and superintendent of public instruction.

Republicans say some of the changes were needed to improve public confidence in government. They also said if it didn’t pass Wednesday, Helene victims would have to wait 40 days until lawmakers meet to vote on relief again.

Article Icon 1Trump Taps Bishop for OMB Deputy Director

President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday evening the nomination of North Carolina’s current District 8 U.S. Representative Dan Bishop to be deputy director at the Office of Management and Budget.

“Dan has been a tireless fighter for our MAGA movement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

A native of Charlotte, Bishop ran for North Carolina attorney general in the 2024 general election but lost to Democrat Jeff Jackson of Chapel Hill. Bishop’s name surfaced as a potential candidate for U.S. attorney general, but Trump ended up nominating former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi instead.

Bishop posted on X that he is honored to be nominated and “ready to get down to it.”
